For an instant, Janek’s face was contorted with fury; then it smoothed, and when the former bouncer spoke to him again, his voice had an eerie, almost feminine quality. “The human wishes to be melodramatic, and welcome you to hell. I prefer not to waste time on politeness.”

The voice cut deeper than the razors, and Garrett shuddered.

Janek laughed, softly, as he bent and withdrew a rusty butcher knife from the bucket.

“I also prefer blood.”

Chapter Seventeen

Lochlann moaned without sound. How long had this been going on? No way to know; his time sense was as numb as every other sense he possessed, hammered flat by the torrent trying to force its way into his body. Part of him was caught up in a raging river of magickal power. Part of him was the river, pure energy, trembling with the force of the surge. And part of him was exhausted and battered and so fucking sick of trying to hold on to any sense of who and what he was, he was nearly ready to just let go and let the river carry him wherever the hell it wanted.

Nearly ready. But Garrett needed him. Needed healing. Needed to be rid of the virus that cast such an ugly pall over what should be a vibrant and healthy and passionate aura. And for that, Lochlann needed his magick back. So he held on, struggling to breathe.

Shit. Is this what it feels like when I heal someone?

It couldn’t be like this for another Fae. The magick hammering at him wasn’t living, it had no sense of what a Fae’s body could bear. It was pure mindless force, needing a Fae to shape it, to channel it. That was his function, as a healer of the Demesne of Water. He poured living magick into the body that required healing, and shaped that magick into a healed form, whether Fae or human. Living magick, not this raw energy. And no one he had ever healed had mentioned anything like this assault.

Which was lucky, because a cure like this would probably kill Garrett.

The feeling of helplessness was almost worse than the battering. He couldn’t move, except to shake, couldn’t so much as open his eyes. He’d only gotten a glimpse of his scair-anam’s face, after the time-stop ended and before the ley energy hammered him literally senseless, and the shock and the fear he’d seen there had magnified his sense of powerlessness almost more than he could bear. Not even enough time to show Garrett a sign of life, let alone reassure him.

And he was blind. Trapped in a body with closed eyes, and his inner sight was no good either, since he couldn’t see the energy, or see by it. He’d lost the sense that let him see by magickal light at the first touch of the power, his virtual retinas fried by a glare as brilliant as the sun.
